Chapter 23

Nathan

The skies open up on me when I’m halfway home and I swear, turning on my windshield wipers and leaning forward to see through the glass. It’s not that rain affects my evening plans, but I still hate the way the sky darkens and everything looks wet and dreary.

I’m still going to go into my garage and have something to drink, but instead of counting down the days until Cassie is out of my hair and no longer my problem, I now have to figure out how to get Malachi to get his head out of the clouds and help me commit my daughter.

If I thought that I could get away with doing it myself, I would have done it a long time ago. The only problem standing in my way is Vanessa, and I know that there’s no way that she’d ever be willing to send Cassie to a home or a hospital. It seems like she actually enjoys spending time with our daughter, which I don’t get.

There’s nothing to enjoy. It’s like talking to a rock. When Cassie looks at me with her eyes blank and her face perfectly still I just want to grab her and scream. It doesn’t make any sense to me why people think that she’s so great.

Sure, she can play the violin, but does that really matter when she won’t even speak to you? What’s she going to do, grow up to be a musician but have someone else always handling her booking for her? How can she pay her bills? Open a bank account? Be a productive member of society?

I slam my hand into the steering wheel and swear before pulling over to the side of the road and taking a deep breath. My house is just a few blocks ahead and I’m going to have to sit through another insufferable dinner with my daughter staring at me before I can escape to the garage.

Before Cassie I loved coming home. I loved spending time with Vanessa. We’d get dressed up and go out on the town, staying out way too late drinking and dancing. Now, though, I’m lucky if my wife isn’t already in her pajamas by eight o’clock. I know that she’s tired, but I want my old wife back.

And the only way to do that is to get rid of our daughter.

I take a deep breath, practically tasting the beer I have in my garage, then nose back onto the road and make my way to the house. When I pull up in the driveway I sit for a moment, almost hoping that Vanessa will come out to greet me.

But she won’t. She’ll be busy making dinner or helping Cassie with something, or even reading a book. With a groan, I get out of my car and walk up to the house, letting myself in. Whatever she’s making smells amazing and I take a huge whiff before stepping into the house.

“Hello?” I call out, making sure that the door is locked behind me.
